Coinsurance is the percentage of the cost of a covered healthcare service that you are responsible for paying after you have met your deductible.
How Coinsurance Works with Insurance
- Deductible: Before your insurance company starts paying for most of your healthcare costs, you must first meet your deductible. This is the amount you pay out-of-pocket for covered healthcare services before your insurance plan starts to pay.
- Coinsurance Percentage: Once you’ve met your deductible, you’re typically responsible for paying a percentage of the remaining costs for covered services. This percentage is your coinsurance. For example, if your plan has an 80/20 coinsurance, you are responsible for paying 20% of the cost of covered services, and your insurance company pays the remaining 80%.
Understanding Your Coinsurance
- Review Your Insurance Policy: The most accurate information about your coinsurance percentage can be found in your insurance policy documents.
- Contact Your Insurance Company: If you have questions about your specific coinsurance percentage, benefits, or coverage, it’s best to contact your insurance company directly.
