A copay, short for “co-payment,” is a fixed amount you pay for a medical service, such as a therapy session, when you visit a healthcare provider. It’s your share of the cost of the service, and it’s typically paid directly to the provider at the time of service.
How Copays Work with Insurance
- Insurance Coverage: Most health insurance plans, including those offered by employers and private insurers, have a copay associated with mental health services.
- Copay Amount: The specific copay amount varies depending on your insurance plan. Some plans may have a flat copay per session, while others may have a percentage copay (e.g., 20% of the total session fee).
- Out-of-Pocket Costs: Copays are considered part of your out-of-pocket maximum, which is the total amount you’re responsible for paying for healthcare expenses each year.
Understanding Your Copay
- Review Your Insurance Policy: The most accurate information about your copay can be found in your insurance policy documents.
- Contact Your Insurance Company: If you have questions about your specific copay amount, benefits, or coverage, it’s best to contact your insurance company directly.
