How to Hold Both Hope and Disappointment

Tools for staying grounded when political outcomes don’t match your values, especially as the year comes to a close

A Season of Mixed Emotions

Holiday lights glow while news headlines weigh heavy. We gather with loved ones even as we carry private worries. And as the calendar turns, we’re invited to dream about the year ahead, sometimes with excitement, sometimes with weariness. It’s natural to feel both hope for the future and disappointment about the present. Learning to hold these two truths together is an act of resilience and self-compassion.

1. Acknowledge What Hurts

Before rushing into New Year intentions or resolutions, pause to notice what you’re carrying from the past year. Maybe political events left you discouraged or uneasy. Maybe personal goals went unmet. Give those feelings space. Journaling or simply saying aloud, “I’m disappointed and that makes sense,” validates your experience and clears emotional room for something new.

2. Practice “Both/And” Thinking

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) calls this skill “both/and”: you can be discouraged by the past year and hopeful for what’s next. You can grieve losses and still celebrate small wins. This mindset softens the pressure to choose one feeling over another and helps you step into January with a balanced heart.

3. Anchor in the Present

Amid year-end bustle and holiday noise, grounding practices help you stay centered. Try a brief sensory check-in while sipping a warm drink: notice the scent, the taste, the temperature in your hands. Or take a slow winter walk, breathing in the crisp air. These simple rituals remind you that steadiness can be found in the moment, even when the world feels uncertain.

4. Focus on Your Sphere of Influence

Big systems can feel immovable, but hope grows when we act where we have agency and control. Volunteer locally, support a community organization, or simply model kindness at a family gathering. These small steps may not rewrite national policy, but they create ripples of positive change, and they’re an impactful way to enter the new year with purpose.

5. Create Intentions, Not Just Resolutions

Instead of traditional resolutions, consider setting gentle intentions: values you want to live by rather than boxes to check. Perhaps it’s “practice patience,” “seek daily moments of wonder,” or “stay engaged without burning out.” Intentions allow both your hope and your disappointment to inform how you move forward.

6. Nurture Sources of Joy and Connection

Joy is not an indulgence; it’s fuel. Share a meal with a friend, revisit a favorite book, or watch the first snowfall with quiet awe. These moments help you begin the new year replenished rather than depleted.

Reflection Prompts for the Season

  • As I look back on the year, what disappointments am I ready to acknowledge and what do they reveal about myself and my personal values?
  • Where did I witness unexpected acts of kindness or light?
  • What small intention can guide me into the new year with both hope and realism?

Hope and disappointment can live side by side. By making space for both, especially as one year closes and another begins, you give yourself permission to start the new year grounded, clear-eyed, and ready for the kind of hope that outlasts any headline.
