Black Joy Is Healing: Honoring Juneteenth Through Mental Wellness

When we talk about Juneteenth, the first thing that comes to mind is often pain, the pain of stolen freedom, of families torn apart, and of a justice system that has always been delayed for Black people in America. But Juneteenth is not just a story of suffering. It’s also a story of survival. Of resilience. Of freedom. And perhaps most beautifully, it’s a story of Black joy.

What is Juneteenth

On June 19, 1865, enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, were finally informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been signed. That moment marked the beginning of a new chapter, though it came with grief, loss, and uncertainty. Yet, even in the face of unimaginable trauma, Black people found ways to celebrate, to gather, to hold each other close. And that spirit still lives on today. Juneteenth is about honoring our history while choosing joy in the present. It’s about reclaiming space that was never meant for us to thrive in, and thriving anyway.

What is Black Joy

Black joy is a form of resistance. It’s the smile on your face after a hard week. It’s music blasting at the family cookout. It’s unapologetically wearing your hair how it grows, loving out loud, or simply taking a deep breath and giving yourself permission to rest. It’s not about ignoring pain. It’s about holding both joy and struggle at the same time and knowing that your joy is sacred. When systems try to silence your voice, your joy says, “I’m still here.” When trauma tells you you’re not enough, your joy says, “I’ve always been more than enough.”

Why Joy Is Mental Health

We often talk about trauma in mental health, and we should. But let’s also talk about what heals it. Joy is not a luxury. It’s a necessary part of your emotional well-being.

Here’s how Black joy can support your mental health:

  1. It validates Who You Are: Celebrating your identity pushes back against internalized messages that say you have to shrink or change to be accepted. Joy affirms your worth and your wholeness.
  2. It Builds Community: Juneteenth reminds us of the power of being together. Laughter, storytelling, music, and dance are all ways to connect, and connection is one of the greatest protectors of mental health.
  3. It Creates Space for Rest: Joy invites rest, and rest is revolutionary. You don’t have to earn your right to take a breath. Rest is how we repair, how we reflect, and how we restore ourselves.
  4. It Strengths Resilience: Practicing joy, even in small ways, build emotional muscle. It reminds us that we’re more than what we’ve been through. That we’re allowed to feel peace. That thriving is possible.

This Juneteenth, Choose Healing. Choose Joy.

There’s so much pain tied to our history. That pain is real. And yet, so is our power. So is our joy. Here are a variety of ways to heal.

  • Celebrate in a way that feels right for you.
  • Gather with your people, or sit in quiet reflection.
  • Rest if you feel tired.
  • Speak your truth.
  • Tell your story.
  • Cry is you need to.
  • Honor where you’ve been.
  • Hold space for where you’re going.

Your joy is your birthright.

Your joy is your inheritance.

Your joy is your healing.

Happy Juneteenth. May you be soft, may you be proud, and may you be free.
