Juneteenth: Honoring Freedom, Resilience, and the Right to Feel

Juneteenth is often called America’s second Independence Day, but for many African Americans, it is much more than a historical celebration. Observed on June 19th, it commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Juneteenth serves as a reminder of the resilience, perseverance, and hope that sustained generations of Black Americans despite unimaginable adversity.

It is a time to honor our ancestors, not only for their strength in surviving oppression, but for their ability to create community, preserve culture, find joy, and envision a better future. Their resilience lives within us today.

However, honoring resilience does not mean glorifying suffering.

Many African Americans grow up hearing the phrase, “You’re so strong.” While often intended as praise, it can create an unspoken expectation to carry pain silently, suppress emotions, and always be resilient. Over time, this narrative can make it difficult to:

● Ask for help when support is needed

● Express sadness, grief, or disappointment

● Acknowledge feelings of stress, anxiety, or overwhelm

● Prioritize rest and self-care without guilt

The reality is that strength is not the absence of emotion. Strength is allowing yourself to feel. As we reflect on Juneteenth, consider giving yourself permission to:

● Process both joy and pain

● Acknowledge your lived experiences

● Lean into vulnerability and authenticity

● Rest without feeling the need to “earn” it

● Embrace softness alongside resilience

Therapy reminds us that healing happens when we create space for our emotions rather than pushing them away. As we celebrate the freedom and resilience of those who came before us, we can also honor ourselves by choosing self-compassion, emotional honesty, and healing.

This Juneteenth, remember: you do not have to be strong all the time. You are allowed to feel, to rest, and to heal. That, too, is a powerful act of freedom.
