Black History Month: More Than a Moment, It’s a Movement

Black History Month is a time dedicated to honoring the achievements, contributions, and resilience of Black people throughout history. Originally established in 1926 by historian Carter G. Woodson as Negro History Week, it was created to ensure that Black history was studied, recognized, and valued in a society that largely ignored it. In 1976, the observance expanded into Black History Month, affirming that Black history is not a footnote, but a foundational part of American history. It is both a reflection on where we have been and a celebration of how far we have come, while recognizing that Black history is not confined to the past. It is alive, evolving, and continuously being made.

Today, we are witnessing achievements that once felt unimaginable. We honor trailblazers like Bessie Coleman, the first Black woman pilot, who took flight in a world that told her she never could. We celebrate Barack Obama, the first Black president of the United States, whose leadership reshaped what many believed was possible. And we recognize Erin Jackson, the first Black woman to win an individual Olympic gold medal in speed skating at the Winter Olympics, continuing a legacy of Black excellence on a global stage.

Once upon a time, these accomplishments were not considered possible, let alone accessible. And yet, here we are.

Being Black means so much because we are constantly achieving new feats, pushing boundaries, and creating space where none existed before. Our excellence isn’t accidental. It’s inherited. It’s the result of generations who dared to dream beyond the limitations placed on them.

While we collectively celebrate these milestones and continue to defy a painful past, one thing I personally resonate with and deeply appreciate is this: being Black means something different to everyone. We are not a monolith. Our identities, passions, beliefs, and paths vary, and that diversity is our strength. Yet, even in our differences, we stand together not only as a people, but as a culture. And that is beautiful.

As a culture, we share collective traumas, slavery, Jim Crow laws, the civil rights movement, and the ongoing fight for justice through movements like Black Lives Matter. These shared experiences have shaped us, but they do not define our limits. Our Blackness is rooted in resilience, in perseverance, and in the courage to be fully yourself while pursuing your goals unapologetically.

Never let anyone define or diminish your Blackness. It belongs to you. It is powerful. It is layered. It is worthy.

And always remember, Black IS beautiful.
